Relation Between Empirical and Molecular Formulae

The empirical formula of a compound gives the simplest whole-number ratio of the atoms of the elements present in a molecule of the compound. For example, the empirical formula of benzene (C_6H_6) is CH, while that of hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2) is HO. The empirical formula does not represent the actual formula of the compound

Molecular or chemical formula: A molecular formula is a representation of a chemical compound using a set of symbols for the atoms of elements present in a molecule of the compound, and shows the actual number of atoms of each element of the compound. In some cases, empirical and molecular formulas are same, e.g., methane (CH_4), boron trichloride (BCl_3), etc.
